Understanding Form N-400 Written on February 26, 2010, by admin.
Form N-400, also known as form N400, is the Application for Naturalization. It is the US immigration form that all permanent residents must fill out in order to apply for US citizenship. The form is available from USCIS Offices in the US, and from some embassies and consulates aboard. It is also available for free download online.
Before filling out form N400 or another US immigration form, consider your options and decisions. Are you ready to accept the duties, rights, privileges, and responsibilities of US citizenship? You should not fill out this US immigration form until you can honestly answer “yes.” In order to fill out an application for US citizenship, you must also have permanent resident status and qualify to become a US citizen. This means that you must be a permanent resident of the US, must have English language skills, must be able to pass a test about US history and government, and must meet all other requirements for US citizenship.
Once you are ready to fill out the US immigration form which is the Application for Naturalization (form N400), it is important that you find the latest version of form N400. Us immigration forms change often, which is one good reason why downloading forms from the USCIS is a great idea. The USCIS website will generally guide you to the new version of the right form.
It is a good idea to give yourself plenty of time, as well. Download form N400 well before you need to submit it. Once you download the form, carefully read over the immigration form and its filing instructions. Check the fees and plan everything you will need to do to complete the form correctly. You may need the services of a translator or immigration attorney if your application is unusual in any way or if you are having a hard time filling out the form.
Form N400, like most US immigration forms, will ask you for your name, contact information, qualification information (such as how long you have been a permanent resident of the US) and information about any disabilities you might have. As well, form N400 will ask you about any criminal record you might have, your residency and employment history, and any time you have spent outside the United States. When filling out an Application for Naturalization, you will also need to provide information about your marital history and details about any children you may have. You will be asked about your moral character, your participation in any groups and organizations, and about any military service you have had.
